The adrenal glands help the body deal with any kind of stress – from emotional stress, to financial problems, to physical threats and relationship problems.
They also play a major role in the body’s response to danger – the “fight or flight” response which mobilizes the body’s resources to react to threat.
Adrenal fatigue refers to a condition where the adrenal glands can no longer mount an adequate response.
The Effects of Prolonged Stress
When too much stress is present, whether physical, mental or emotional, the adrenal glands become over-stimulated and start to slow down – hence the term “adrenal fatigue”.
Adrenal fatigue can be caused by a one-time extreme stress such as a bereavement, or by a prolonged situation such as stress in the workplace.
Other factors can also play a role in adrenal fatigue and these include poor diet, insufficient sleep, substance abuse and prolonged situations that leave a person feeling trapped – such as a bad relationship, lack of financial resources and so on. Chronic illness can also reduce the function of the adrenal glands.

The Importance of Your Adrenal Glands
Your adrenal glands play a crucial role in regulating essential body functions, including stress response, metabolism, and immune system health.
These small but powerful glands produce hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which help your body manage stress and maintain energy levels.
Proper adrenal gland function is vital for overall well-being, as imbalances can lead to conditions such as adrenal fatigue, affecting your health and quality of life.
What are the Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue
The symptoms of adrenal fatigue can be varied but general tiredness is usually present and can be combined with:
- Being unable to get out of bed in the morning
- Craving sweet or salty snacks
- Over-reliance on a morning coffee to “get going”
- Difficulty in recovering from illness
- Being unable to cope with stress
- Foggy thinking
Diagnosing Adrenal Fatigue
Many conventional doctors do not recognize adrenal fatigue as a medical condition and perform no testing of the glands, so adrenal fatigue is rarely diagnosed or treated.
People who experience unexplained tiredness often rationalize it as mental stress, job related, or just getting older.
This is unfortunate as there are simple tests that can confirm if you are suffering from this debilitating condition and the fix is readily available.
Receiving a Functional Evaluation of Adrenals
When a patient presents with symptoms of unexplained tiredness, a functional evaluation will be performed by the practitioner, to help to determine whether adrenal fatigue is the cause.
It is common to find adrenal fatigue associated to other health issues, since one of the adrenals jobs is to respond to stress factors, including other non-optimum health conditions.
During the evaluation, factoring in the patient’s history, existing health conditions, and life situations, the contributing factors will be determined.
Treatment Plan for Adrenal Fatigue
When the patient has been diagnosed by an adrenal fatigue specialist they will create an adrenal fatigue recovery plan.
This will include addressing the underlying causes of the condition, along with a plan to support and restore the adrenal glands.
The causes, and severity of adrenal fatigue vary from person to person. For this reason, individualized treatment programs vary patient to patient.
